Ever heard of a story from Solomon Islands where when a tree was not easy to bring down, they would gather around it and curse it. Eventually, the tree would wither and die, letting the people use the area for any development means. You don’t necessarily have to believe in it but their theory was that offensive hollering killed tree’s spirit and without one, it was nothing.
This actually makes sense. Not just for trees, but for us humans too. In fact, what’s the worst thing we can do to ourselves. Lose hope. Start assuming only bad can happen to us. And if we keep repeating the same curse to ourselves, our spirits are dented. We go in despair.
A little glimpse into my personal case:
The for case: I always say I have been extremely fortunate and privileged to be where I was born, and I am. Still, we all do get to taste a bit of life every now and then. And when we are through it, we wish for more. This is who we are. I was once at a level who wished to be able to afford his own means of transport instead of relying on others and hanging on the buses of Karachi for hours (you know what it’s like only when you have been through it) earning barely 4000 PKR a month.
A little over decade later, I say things like money isn’t the only thing and there is more to life. Oh well, point is my case here was I obviously worked really hard for where I am and I never lost hope despite the challenges, despite how impossible numbers seemed back then. And I won this case.
The against case: I have made super bad financial decisions whether property investments, stocks or digital currencies. I realized the only common thing among all my failures has been the fact that I wasn’t positive about them. I lost confidence, hope. I lost this case.
I am already on my road to recovery with above, having fixed my spirit, confidence and hope. And I know I will do it, the only thing stopping me was me believing it is not for me or nothing will ever come out positive for me. Well, I was all wrong.
No matter where you are in life and what you would like to achieve, as long as you stay positive, and OBVIOUSLY work hard towards it, no one can stop you from holding that win. There is a reason why even most religions mention hopelessness and despair as a major sin.
Depending on how long you have been in such a sad state, take your time accordingly and get over it. Once you do, once you have made peace with yourself and cleanse your mind of any doubts, the only way is up. Life gives you lows only to give you chances to capitalize even bigger on highs.
Life only begins when you are in content with yourself and are in a position to live for others not just for yourself. It’s a topic for later but that’s where we all need to be. Our focus has to be on reaching that level as we all are made to be where we do more for each other.

Thanks for summarizing what most of us going through. Loved these “ once you have made peace with yourself and cleanse your mind of any doubts, the only way is up.”.
Thank you Salman, great you can relate to it – i try to write what we can all make sense of.
Wonderful thoughts. This article, like those before it, is especially motivating for those who are still trying to find their way.
If you feel comfortable with it, please share the actions you took or mindset you worked towards that helped you regain your confidence after the setbacks. Thanks!

Loved it, would love to read more about “The Against Case”. I think most of us have gone through “bad financial decisions” chapter and many of us did accept “it’s not for me” and moved on .
Irfan, this is true – have had so many experiences, may not give you exact solution but at least can tell you how to get on with it and make the most of it, quiting it means you have 0 chance. we can catch up sometime and discuss it.
